What is Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer-based reading management
program which enables educators to examine various forms of guided
reading practice. The program is an assessment tool which assists
teachers to help students gradually transform into successful, and
hopefully life-long readers.
How AR Works:
The kids check out AR Books in their classroom or the school library.
These books should be in their "point range". The AR list denotes this
range on the BL or Book Level Column. These levels are also noted
by different colors on the spines; you can see the colors in the BL
sorted list below.
The students take an AR Computer Test in their own classrooms to test
their reading comprehension, and earn points for each book read and test
passed. Each book has a point value which can be found on the list and
also inside the book covers.
Children can always ask their homeroom teacher or our librarian Ms. Schoene for additional
help or information.
Our young readers are rewarded by "making it on the wall of fame": you may have
seen the wall in the elementary gym/office hallway; the kids have their
picture and name put up for everyone to see. As they reach certain point
levels they move up along the wall.
What parents can do to help their children read better:
Promote reading everywhere for your child. Help him/her take
advantage of reading books at school and the many opportunities to read
outside of school. Create a home library with attractive books and
set an example by turning off the TV or video-games to spend some time
reading together! Please, take the time to read out loud to your
children and have them read out loud to you. Support them in reading
books at, or, where possible, above their level.
Be happy for them and occasionally reward them for their success while
they're earning more AR points. There are so many chances, don't waste
them.

You may
download a complete AR list sorted either by title, author or book
level.
However, these are LARGE files and will take quite some time to
download, esp. if you are on slow internet connection, such as dial-up.
